Community, Integrity, and Leadership

The RIGHT CHOICE for BLACK DIAMOND

The most effective way to bring unity to a divided community is to identify and highlight its strengths, then use those strengths to bridge the gaps. I’m offering my community leadership experience to help build a positive future for Black Diamond.

Recognizing that our community is at a pivotal moment in its history, and that I have skills that would benefit the community as it goes through this transformation, I’m asking for your vote for Black Diamond City Council, Seat 2.

A Voice for All of Black Diamond

Why I'm Running for City Council

As a public school leader for 15 years, I have had the opportunity to support multiple communities through transformations. My experience has taught me how to develop relationships and leverage the strengths of all stakeholders to achieve common goals. As Black Diamond navigates unprecedented growth in the years ahead, the City Council must be equipped with leaders who have the ability to establish a vision, recognize the needs of the residents from multiple perspectives, and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that our community thrives. My experience in these areas will help guide Black Diamond through this transformation.

I have lived in Black Diamond with my family for seven years. My kids have spent their formative years here and attend school in the Tahoma School District. I work for the Kent School District as an elementary school principal. We love living here because of the access to nature trails, the increasingly diverse community, and the proximity to work and school.

As your council member, I will prioritize smart growth, youth development and inclusivity with every important decision I make. I will use my leadership skills to help our community work through the challenges we're facing to create a bright future for our children.

I'm asking for your vote for Black Diamond City Council, Seat 2 on November 2.

My VALUES

COMMUNITY

A Voice for Everyone
If the community feels divided, it’s because we are! Covering just over seven square miles of land and water, Black Diamond has a unique challenge when it comes to bringing its 6,000 residents together. We are spread out around Lake Sawyer, up in Morgan Creek or Lawson Hills, Ten Trails, and 'Old Town,' among other small developments and individual homes throughout our city. These geographical divisions are joined by the challenge of Black Diamond residents living in four different school districts and two water districts. The residents in all of these areas need a voice. I will be a part of increasing communication with all residents, being intentionally inclusive of all of our neighbors.

INTEGRITY

Restoring Trust
I believe in doing the right thing for the community. I recognize that what is right isn’t always popular and what’s popular isn’t always right. Because of this, I will prioritize communication with stakeholders. I am interested in hearing residents’ opinions, thoughts, and ideas and I am looking forward to engaging in meaningful discussions with community members so I can synthesize the varying viewpoints, identify common ground, and help us to move forward in a way that gives everyone reassurance that their opinions matter.

LEADERSHIP

Bridging the Gaps
Our community faces challenges, and deserves experienced leaders who can bring groups together. I have a track record of leading diverse groups and bringing them together in consensus. In my experience, even when not everyone gets their way, they feel better about tough decisions if they’ve been included in the process. I know how to listen, apply feedback, communicate the process, and explain the outcome to stakeholders.

ISSUES

REGIONAL GROWTH

With all the growth coming to Black Diamond, affordable housing has been overlooked. I will advocate for affordable housing and an increase in public transportation to ensure we remain a welcoming city for people in all price ranges and age groups. Black Diamond is a great place to raise a family and to retire, so let’s make sure people can live here at all stages of their lives.

TRANSPORTATION and ROAD IMPROVEMENT

Improvements outlined in the Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) are in process, but residents are frustrated with how much time it is taking to see the results. I will fight for safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists, road improvements, and a community effort to control speed violations. I will advocate for open communication between the City of Black Diamond and Oakpointe, as well as WSDOT. We need to work together with our State legislators, King County leadership, and neighboring city governments to address the problem areas along Hwy 169 which are impacting all of us.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

To engage residents you must know them – where they live, where they recreate, and which schools and other institutions are important to them – and be present in our community. I want to engage those who lack trust in our system by meeting them where they are.

POLICE and FIRE FUNDING

I will work to ensure appropriate funding for our police and fire departments so these critical services are available when Black Diamond residents need them. I will insist that the City of Black Diamond works with our partners at Mountain View Fire & Rescue and the Black Diamond Police Department to ensure they get what they need to both prevent and respond to emergencies.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Special activities at events like Miners’ Day and Black Diamond Labor Days highlight the community’s commitment to youth. Community leaders stepped up and expedited the skate park replacement, as well. I will work with the community to ensure increased opportunities for youth, involving the arts and athletics in particular. It’s time to think about what the growing number of families need in Black Diamond: developed recreation areas, dance and music studios, and youth-centered committees and projects. Prioritizing our youth puts a clear focus on the future of Black Diamond.

WORKING with the DEVELOPER

I will join the City Council in holding Oakpointe accountable to the promises made to the current population and the new residents. We need to focus on developing a community hub for local businesses that is small, walkable, and user-friendly, encouraging community interactions.
